This storm will push into the Upper Midwest through Saturday evening and overnight Saturday. It will intensify as it does so, with snow turning heavy from Minneapolis on east into the Great Lakes region by Sunday morning.

Nearly 1,300 flights have been canceled already due to the weather. Approximately half of those cancellations are from Delta Airlines, as it proactively cancelled some flights for this weekend at Midwest airports, including at its Minneapolis-St. Paul hub.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Whoopi Goldberg is the only woman to host the Oscars multiple times

  • Late-night talk show hosts, including Johnny Carson, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien, are popular choices for the biggest night in Hollywood

It's not easy to successfully host theAcademy Awards, let alone be invited back to do so multiple times. However, a few leading men — and one woman — have done just that.

The first Oscars ceremony was held in 1929, and since then, the awards show has experimented with everything from solo acts anddynamic groupstogoing hostless. The most memorable emcees, though, leaned funny, likeBilly Crystal, who hosted a whopping nine ceremonies. Still, 10 fewer times than the record-holder and four-timerWhoopi Goldberg.

Conan O'Brienwill onlybe on his second roundwhen hetakes the Oscar stageon March 15, 2026, and only time will tell if he'll hit four likehis late-night talk show hostbrethrenJimmy Kimmelor even five likeJohnny Carson.

From Hope to Kimmel, here's a look at the celebrities who've hosted the Academy Awards at least three times.

Bob Hope: 19 Times

Bob Hope— known for his work alongside the legendaryBing Crosby— hosted the Academy Awards a record 19 times.

The British-American comedian and actor first took to the stage at the 12th Academy Awards in 1940. Revered for his jokes and witty one-liners, he hosted the show's first televised event in 1953, in addition to its first broadcast in color in 1966.

The icon's last hosting gig came in 1978, but in 1991, he returned to the Oscar stage while Crystal was emcee.

"Remember me? TheMacaulay Culkinof 1927?" he joked, according to the New York Historical Museum.

Hope died on July 27, 2003, at age 100.

Years hosted: 1940-1943, 1945, 1946, 1953, 1955, 1958, 1959-1962, 1965-1968, 1975 and 1978.

"To me,a show needs a host; you need a center," Crystal told PEOPLE in 2021 before adding, "I had so many great memories hosting the show. It was a history of cinema for me."

The comedian, director and actor took the stage for the first time at the 62nd Academy Awards in 1990, and the last time he hosted was at the 84th ceremony in 2012. He has opened up about how he'll most likely never host the Oscars again.

Lewis emceed consecutively at the 28th and 29th Academy Awards, followed by his third and final gig at the 31st ceremony in 1959.

That last time is infamously recognized as the ceremony in which the final award was presented ahead of schedule, causing the show to end 20 minutes early.

As the first host in history to experience this situation, Lewisput his improvisational skills to useto kill time, rallying actors onstage to sing "There's No Business Like Show Business." That's live TV for you!

Kazakhs vote in referendum on new constitution that could keep the president in power

Kazakhs head to the polls Sunday to vote in a referendum on a new constitution that would strengthen President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's grip on power in Central Asia's largest country.

Associated Press

The proposal merges the Kazakh parliament's two chambers into one and gives the president the right to appoint all government officials, including the restoration of the post of vice-president.

This second constitutional change in four years was initiated by Tokayev, who explains the constitutional changes as a response to the need to make quick decisions in a rapidly changing world. But analysts say they could pave the way for him to retain power after his term expires.

The 72-year-old Tokayev, a former Soviet official and Kazakh diplomat who previously served at the U.N., is currently limited to one seven-year term until 2029. Analysts believe Tokayev could use the referendum to reset presidential term limits.

"If the transition of power doesn't go as Tokayev would like ... then he will be able to say that with the adoption of the new Constitution, we have reset presidential term limits," analyst Temur Umarov, a fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, told The Associated Press. "The new constitution could provide Tokayev with a loophole for reelection to another term."

Japan to release oil stocks as US says buy American

By Katya Golubkova and Yuka Obayashi

Reuters

TOKYO, March 15 (Reuters) - Japan plans to start releasing oil from its stockpiles on Monday to soften the shock from the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, a ‌stark reminder of the oil crisis half a century ago that prompted Tokyo to create reserves.

As ‌gasoline prices across Japan started to rise with the war disrupting supplies from the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz, Tokyo pledged to release a record 80 million barrels of oil, about 45 days of supply for the resource-poor nation.

The government has asked Japan's refiners to use the released crude, which will reduce the national reserves by 17%, to secure domestic supplies. It is not known how much of the oil will go to a global release of 400 million barrels being ‌coordinated by the International Energy Agency to address the war's supply shock and price volatility.

RESERVES CAN STABILISE SUPPLY BUT 'MAINLY BUY TIME'

Japan's release shows how seriously Tokyo views the disruption, said Yuriy Humber, CEO of Tokyo-based consultancy Yuri Group.

"The reserves can help stabilise supplies and prices in the short term but they mainly buy time. They can't fully offset a prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz," he said.

Any potential release from 12 million barrels jointly held in Japan by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait would be in addition to the announced ‌80 million barrels, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says.

Japan started its national oil reserve system in 1978, several years after the Arab oil embargo. The Group of Seven nation, reliant on the Middle East for around 90% of its oil, now stockpiles 254 days of consumption.

It will start releasing 15 days' worth of private-sector oil on Monday and a month's worth from the state reserves from late this month, according to ‌METI.

As private companies prepare to tap Japan's stockpiles, METI Minister Ryosei Akazawa said they are also looking for supplies from the U.S., Central Asia, South America and Gulf nations that can bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan gets around 4% of its oil from the ‌U.S. after largely stopping purchases from Russia following Moscow's 2022 Ukraine invasion - when Tokyo last tapped its reserves.

"When you look at the conflict in the Middle East ... you're reminded of all that crude oil that has gone from Alaska to Japan was never targeted with a successful terrorist attack," U.S. Environmental Protection ‌Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin told Reuters.

"This conflict ... is a reminder that along the Indo-Pacific, a lot of other nations can look to the United States, where we have the resources."

Hospital officials say an Israeli strike killed 4 in Gaza, including a child and his pregnant mother

CAIRO (AP) — At least four Palestinians, including a boy and his pregnant mother, were killed Sunday by an Israeli airstrike in the war-torn Gaza Strip, hospital authorities said.

Associated Press

The strike hit a house in Nuseirat, an urban refugee camp in central Gaza, killing a couple and their young son, according to the nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. The fourth fatality was taken to the Awda hospital in Nuseirat.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

The deaths were the latest fatalities among Palestinians in the coastal enclave since an October ceasefire deal attempted to halt a more than 2-year war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

While the heaviest fighting has subsided, the ceasefire has still seen almost daily Israeli fire. Israeli forces have carried out repeated airstrikes and frequently fire on Palestinians near military-held zones, killing more than 650 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials.

Israel says it has responded to violations of the ceasefire or targeted wanted militants. But about half of those killed have been women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

They were among more than 72,200 Palestinians killed in the war which was triggered when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The militant attack killed over 1,200 people and took over 250 others hostage.

The health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-led government, maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by U.N. agencies and independent experts. But it does not give a breakdown of civilians and militants.

Militants have carried out shooting attacks on troops, and Israel says its strikes are in response to that and other violations. Four Israeli soldiers have been killed since the ceasefire.

Sammy Hagar setlist rocks through Van Halen, solo hits in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Whether singing Van Halen, Chickenfoot or his robust solo material,Sammy Hagarstill wants to rock.

USA TODAY

The veteran yowler and a stacked band of all-stars - Van Halen bassistMichael Anthony, ace guitar heroJoe Satriani, powerhouse drummerKenny Aronoffand keyboardist extraordinaire Greg Phillinganes − are storming Las Vegas with the return of "The Best of All Worlds" residency.

On opening night Wednesday, March 11, atDolby Live at Park MGM, Hagar, 78, and his merry crew attacked an 18-song set list that included rarities (Chickenfoot's "Soap On a Rope," Van Halen's "Mine All Mine"), fist-pumping Van Halen classics ("Right Now," "Panama") and "I Can't Drive 55," the Hagar MTV staple that prefaced his replacing David Lee Roth as Van Halen's frontman in 1985.

At the third date of the run on Saturday, March 14, Hagar mixed up the set list, opening with the thoughtful "Right Now," dropping in the title track from 1986's "5150" and handing lead vocal duties to Anthony - who seems unchanged from the '80s in hair and high harmonies - for the Van Halen stomper, "Somebody Get Me a Doctor."

Throughout the 100-minute show, the gregarious Hagar clowned with band members while singing into his red-tipped microphone, dropped shots of tequila into cups for fans in an onstage corral during "Mas Tequila" and amusingly thanked Satriani "for teaching me my own song" after a crisp "There's Only One Way to Rock."
