Melania Trump is chic in black at movie's Kennedy Center premiere

Thenew "Melania" documentaryhad a splashy premiere at the Trump Kennedy Center in Washington on Jan. 29, 2026. See which celebrities and political figures walked the red carpet, starting with President Donald Trumpfirst lady Melania Trump.

Premiering first at the newly named Trump-Kennedy Center on Jan. 29, the movie was directed bydisgraced filmmaker Brett Ratnerand represents his return to filmmaking.

The film's common thread, thin at times, is the first lady's commitment to style. She speaks fondly ofher late mother, Amalija Knavs, and describes her as a designer. Working in the textile industry in her native Slovenia, Melania said it was Amalija who fostered in her a "deep appreciation for great design" and the "level of perfection required to create timeless pieces."

While moviegoers are shut out of the decisions that led to the first lady's signature looks from the inauguration, the documentary does show her trying on the navy blue fitted coat and wide brim hat she donned for the swearing-in ceremony. She doles out notes to make the lapels bigger, and the white blouse peeking out from the coat more fitted. Designer and stylist Hervé Pierre tells the camera that because she hails from the fashion world, they speak the same language.

As forthathat, fodder for many a meme on Inauguration Day, she doesn't discuss its symbolism, but can be heard telling her team to bring in the brim a bit. Later in the film, a shot shows it being balanced on her head atop a tight bun before she leaves for the rotunda.

Viewers are also privy to her first fitting for the black and white gown that she wore to a series of inauguration balls. Delighted with Pierre's design, which pairs a structured white strapless gown with an angular black stripe on the bodice, she says: "Very my colors, black and white ... very me."

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrive for the Liberty inaugural ball in Washington on Jan. 20, 2025.

The look, paired with a black choker adorned by a sparkly brooch, gets few notes from the first lady − she wants the hem trimmed slightly and the bodice brought in a bit. During a meeting leading up to the event, Trump prods her about her look.

"You have a good dress, you have a nice dress?" the president quips, adding that it would be hard to beat her 2017 era look. "You will see," Melania shoots back.

As the movie winds to a close, the fashion-first emphasis is driven home by a shot of her sky-high heel entering a black SUV.

"As always, I will move forward with purpose and, of course, with style," she says.
