NEED TO KNOW

  • Emma Thompson opened up about adapting Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility into the 1995 film of the same name

  • The actress said she's not sure, looking back, how she did it and that at the time it felt like "plagiarism"

  • The film turns 30 this December

Emma Thompson's 1995 adaptation ofSense and Sensibilityis now a classic — but her feelings when adapting Jane Austen's classic novel were more mixed.

Thompson appeared on the Dec. 16 episode of theBBCBookclubpodcastto talk aboutSense and Sensibilityin honor of Austen's 250th birthday. She also discussed how she adapted the movie, which was released 30 years ago this December and directed by Ang Lee. In addition to writing the script, which won the Oscar for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), she also starred in the movie as Elinor Dashwood.

During the discussion,a fan asked, "When you were writing the screenplay, did you ever find yourself arguing with Jane Austen in your head about what she really meant? Or did you sort of apologize in advance and just get on with it?"

"I did a lot of apologizing," Thompson, 66, admitted. "I thought, 'God this is just plagiarism, plane and simple. I'm just taking something and making it into something else.' "

She continued, "You know, I felt quite diffident about it. I really did."

But she said now looking back at it, she's amazed by the choices she made. "I read it now and I think, 'I don't know how I did that, actually,' " she said. "I don't because an awful lot of the dialogue is not hers, because we had to invent so many things. Yes, one did feel very apologetic."

"But of course, all of this was pointed out to me in no uncertain terms by the Jane Austen Society in America, who disapproved hugely," she said of the many changes between book and screen. "They disapproved of so many things."

The person in the audience pointed out one scene that was cut that she thought they'd be angry about: a scene where Mr. Willoughby, Marianne's caddish suitor, comes to see her when she's ill.

Thompson nodded asher husband Greg Wisejokingly yelled out, "That's my question!" Wise, 59, played Willoughby, and the pair met on the set of the film.

Thompson's screenplay win made her the first person to win Oscars for both acting (for 1992'sHoward's End) and writing; she remains the only person to have done so.

Sense and Sensibilityalso starred Kate Winslet as Marianne, Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars, Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, Imogen Stubbs as Lucy Steele, Gemma Jones as Mrs. Dashwood, Harriet Walter as Fanny Dashwood, James Fleet as John Dashwood, Hugh Laurie as Mr. Palmer and Imelda Staunton as Charlotte Palmer. The movie made $135 million at the box office and was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture and acting nods for Thompson and Winslet (who would star in Titanic two years later).

Sense and Sensibilitywas Austen's first published work, released in 1811. A new adaptation of the novel is in the works, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Thompson also flexed her screenwriting skills on 2005'sPride and Prejudice, where she came in to punch up some of the dialogue, specifically anow-beloved scenewhere Charlotte Lucas, played by Claudie Blakley, makes a plea to Elizabeth Bennet, played by Keira Knightley, to not judge her for her engagement to Mr. Collins, played by Tom Hollander.

Director Joe Wright told PEOPLEin April, "She improvised that scene as I wrote down what she was improvising. She was playing both parts, and I remember when she turned and said, 'Don't judge me. Don't you dare judge me,' I almost wept."

A man has been charged after allegedly breaking into the grounds of Kensington Palace — the London residence ofKate MiddletonandPrince William— twice in the days before Christmas, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police obtained by PEOPLE.

The spokesperson confirmed that 39-year-old Derek Egan had been charged with trespassing on a protected site and breaching bail conditions. "The charges relate to incidents on Sunday, December 21, and Tuesday, December 23, when Egan was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site in Palace Green, Kensington," the spokesperson added.

Although the Prince and Princess of Wales, both 43, use a wing of the palace as theirLondon residence, they were not there at the time of the alleged break-ins, PEOPLE understands. They are thought to have been staying atAnmer Hall, their private country home on the Sandringham estate, during their children's holiday vacation from school.

Other members of the royal family also live at Kensington Palace.

Just a few days after the alleged incidents, the Prince and Princess and their three childrenappeared at the Christmas Day serviceat the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Norfolk. The yearly tradition sees the royals head to church and greet members of the public afterward.

According to U.K. newspaperThe Times, Egan appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, Dec. 30, where he admitted the charges. A hearing date was subsequently set for Jan. 6, when Egan's pleas will be confirmed. The judge said, according to the outlet, that it will take place in Egan's absence, "in view of his disorderly behaviour to officers of the court and the court itself."

The judge added, "I am not granting him bail on the basis that if he is convicted, there is a real possibility he will receive a custodial sentence."

Russia says Ukrainian drone strike kills 24 in occupied Ukraine as tensions grow amid peace talks

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian officials on Thursday said a Ukrainian drone strike killed 24 people and wounded at least 50 more as they celebrated the New Year in a Russian-occupied village in Ukraine's Kherson region, as tensions between the two nations continue to spike despite diplomats hailing productive peace talks.

Three drones struck a cafe and hotel in the resort town of Khorly on the Black Sea coast, the region's Moscow-installed leader, Vladimir Saldo, said in a statement on Telegram. He said that one of the drones carried an incendiary mixture, sparking a blaze.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment on the claim of a strike. The attack could not be independently verified by The Associated Press.

The attack was condemned by a number of Russian officials. Valentina Matviyenko, the chair of Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, said that the strike "strengthened" Russia's resolve to quickly achieve its goals in its almost four-year invasion of Ukraine.

The strike "once again demonstrates the validity of our initial demands," Matviyenko said.

The statement follows claims from Moscow that Ukraine launched a long-range drone attack against one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's official residences in northwestern Russia on Tuesday. Kyiv has denounced the claims as a "lie."

Russia's Defense Ministry released a video on Wednesday of a downed drone it said was involved in the attack.

The nighttime clip showed a man in camouflage, a helmet and a Kevlar vest standing near a damaged drone lying in snow. The man, his face covered, talks about the drone. Neither the man nor the Defense Ministry provided any location or date.

The video and claims could not be independently verified.

Rising tensions

Kyiv has called the allegations of an attack on Putin's residence a ruse to derail ongoing peace negotiations, which have ramped up in recent weeks on both sides of the Atlantic.

In his New Year's address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a peace deal was "90% ready" but warned that the remaining 10%, believed to include key sticking points such as territory, would "determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, how people will live."

Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said Wednesday that he, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's son-in-law andadviser Jared Kushnerhad a "productive call" with the national security advisers of Britain, France, Germany and Ukraine "to discussadvancing the next stepsin the European peace process."

"We focused on how to move the discussions forward in a practical way on behalf of (Trump's) peace process, including strengthening security guarantees and developing effective deconfliction mechanisms to help end the war and ensure it does not restart," Witkoff said in a post on X.

Lead Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov also reaffirmed that European and Ukrainian officials plan to meet Saturday, while Zelenskyy isdue to hold talksnext week with European leaders.

Waves of attacks

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russia attacked the Odesa region overnight, targeting civilian infrastructure in several waves of drone attacks, according to regional head Oleh Kiper.

In a post on Telegram, Kiper said a two-story residential building was damaged and that a drone hit an apartment on the 17th floor of a high-rise building without detonating. There were no casualties reported.

In its daily report, Ukraine's air force said air defense forces had downed or suppressed 176 of 205 drones targeting the country overnight. It said hits by 24 strike drones were recorded at 15 locations and the attack was still ongoing. ___

Pope opens 2026 with plea for peace in countries bloodied by war, families wounded by violence

ROME (AP) —Pope Leo XIVopened 2026 on Thursday with a plea for peace, singling out in particular countries "bloodied by conflict" and families wounded by violence.

Leo celebrated aNew Year's DayMass in St. Peter's Basilica and then delivered a special noontime prayer from his studio overlooking the piazza, which was full of pilgrims and tourists on the bright, chilly day.

Leo noted that Jan. 1 marks the church'sWorld Day of Peaceand used the occasion to issue a prayer.

"Let us all pray together for peace: first, among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain," he said.

After abusy Christmas season, Leo has a few days of rest before he celebrates the church's Epiphany holiday on Jan. 6. On that day too, he officially closes out the2025 Holy Year, the once-every-quarter-century celebration that brought millions of pilgrims to Rome.

Immediately thereafter, he is to preside over atwo-day meetingof the entire College of Cardinals, the princes of the church who elected him pope, as well as those who are over age 80 and didn't participate in the conclave but still remain part of the college. Leo is resurrecting a tradition largely eschewed by Pope Francis to convene cardinals every so often to seek their counsel on how to govern the 1.4 billion-strong Catholic Church.

Taiwan's president pledges to defend island's sovereignty after China's military drills

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Thursday vowed to defend the self-ruled island's sovereignty in the face of China's "expansionist ambitions," days after Beijing wrapped uplive-fire military drillsaround the island.

"In the face of China's rising expansionist ambitions, the international community is watching to see whether the Taiwanese people have the resolve to defend themselves," Lai said in his New Year's address.

"As president, my stance has always been clear: to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, strengthen national defense and the resilience of the whole society, and comprehensively construct an effective deterrence and democratic defense mechanism," he added.

Lai's comments came days after China wrapped up live-fire drills around Taiwan featuring rocket launches, aircraft and warships. Beijing had expressed anger at a plannedU.S. arms sales to Taiwan, as well as at Japan's new leader's comments thatTokyo could intervenein the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The planned arms sale, valued at more than $11 billion, is the U.S.'s largest so far to Taiwan. It includes missiles, drones, artillery systems and military software.

The United States is obligated by its own laws to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself. China claims the self-ruled island as its own territory and threatens to annex it, by force if necessary.

China's leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday reiterated those threats in his own televised New Year's address, calling an eventual annexation "unstoppable."

Taiwan last year announced a special $40 billion budget for arms purchases, including to build an air defense system with high-level detection and interception capabilities called the Taiwan Dome.

The budget will be allocated over eight years, from 2026 to 2033, and comes after Lai alreadypledged to raise defense spendingto 5% of the island's GDP, as part of his strategy amid China's threats of invasion.

"Facing China's serious military ambitions, Taiwan has no time to wait," Lai said.

Mistreanu reported from Beijing.
